Moving to Estonia? Avoid These 3 Expensive Mistakes That Most People Regret

Life in Estonia, Estonia, Moving to Estonia

Estonia is a beautiful, innovative, and efficient country—but it’s not for everyone.

Whether you’re dreaming of digital freedom, a better quality of life, or just a fresh start, Estonia offers a lot. But after living here for eight years and speaking with hundreds of people planning to relocate, I’ve noticed the same painful patterns repeat.

Here are the three most expensive mistakes people make when moving to Estonia—and how to avoid them if you want a happy, sustainable life in Estonia.

1. Moving to Estonia Without a Clear Long-Term Plan

Let’s get this out of the way: Estonia is not a short-term hack.

The number one mistake people make is moving here simply because they want to “escape” their home country or get a passport from a developed nation. On the surface, Estonia might look like a perfect base—it’s part of the EU, it’s stable, it’s digital. But if you don’t know what you actually want 10 years from now, you might waste years chasing the wrong thing.

💡 Estonian citizenship takes 8 years.
That’s a long time if your only goal is a passport. Countries like Canada or the Netherlands may offer citizenship much faster.

And it’s not just about the time. You’ll also need to learn the language to at least B1 level, which usually takes 12–18 months of real study.

If your plan is just:
“I’ll go to Estonia and see what happens”…
You’re setting yourself up for confusion and burnout.

Instead, ask:

  • Why Estonia?

  • What’s my 5-year plan?

  • Am I willing to commit 8 years here if needed?

Without clarity, life in Estonia can feel like floating in limbo—especially when winter hits.

2. Believing You’ll Thrive Financially in Any Field

Estonia has become a startup darling. It’s the birthplace of Skype, Wise, and Bolt. So naturally, people assume they’ll do well here financially.

And some do—if they’re in tech.

Tech jobs in Estonia pay more than 2.5x the national average. But if you’re a teacher, artist, social worker, or in any non-tech profession, be careful. The cost of living in Estonia—rent, food, taxes—can quickly wipe out your savings.

I’ve seen people move here hoping to “live better,” only to find they can barely cover rent. If you’re not in tech and don’t have remote income, do the math:

📊 Over 8 years, the cost of living can easily exceed €500,000.
That’s half a million euros—just to live modestly.

If your goal is to move from middle class to upper middle class, you’ll need a strategy. Remote work, tech skills, or your own business (especially in tech) can help. But hope alone isn’t enough.

So before moving to Estonia, ask:

  • What will I earn here?

  • What are my expenses?

  • Can I grow, or will I just survive?

3. Ignoring the Mental Health Impact of Relocation

No one talks about this enough.

Even if you’ve moved countries before, Estonia is different.

  • Winters are long and dark.

  • Social circles take time to build.

  • The culture is reserved.

  • There’s less food variety, fewer events, and limited distractions.

It’s not bad. It’s just quiet.

And if you’re not mentally prepared for that, it can break you.

I’ve seen people burn out in year one. Others hit a wall in year three. It sneaks up on you, especially if you came here thinking life would “just be better.”

Think of it like this:
Moving to Estonia is a marathon for your mind.

You wouldn’t run a marathon without training, right? So why move to a new country without preparing your inner world?

✅ Before arriving:

  • Get therapy or a support network.

  • Read up on culture shock.

  • Plan routines that keep you grounded.

If you don’t take mental health seriously here, even the best opportunities can start to feel meaningless.
